If you’re wearing sunscreen properly, then by summer’s end, you should have to replace your favorite bottle, tube or powder. One of the things I find when I’m making recommendations on the sales floor is that my customers just aren’t wearing the right amount of sunscreen to stay protected against damaging UV rays. This is mainly in part to the fact they just haven’t found one they absolutely love applying. If this sounds a little bit like you, you may just need a little help finding the right sunscreen that bests suits you. With so many different formulas out there, it can make choosing the right product more stressful than it needs to be. I thought I’d break down some of my favorite sunscreen products to help you find the right one.
If you wear foundation, re-applying a sunscreen lotion won’t be happening. This doesn’t mean you should be satisfied with the small SPF your foundation has, especially if you’re looking to spend time outdoors. Powdered sunscreens make re-applying so much easier, plus it helps keep your makeup looking fresh. Colorscience, jane iredale cosmetics, Peter Thomas Roth and Eminence all carry sunscreen in powder form. The perfect addition to your makeup bag or tote, you’ll actually enjoy the re-applying process. A powdered sunscreen is also a perfect option for anyone with oily skin who dreads using lotion formulas.
For those of you who are super active or athletic, the last thing you want to haul around is a sunscreen bottle. Sunscreen sticks are perfect because you can just put it in your pocket and go about your outdoor workout without any worry. Both Mustela and Sun Bum have sunscreen sticks that glide on easily for quick protection against the sun. If you’re a parent with an athletic child, this is a great item for them to keep in their locker before PE or sports. For those of you who really don’t like lotion or powder formulas, a stick may be the perfect choice, as it feels fairly invisible on the skin.
For someone on the go or for the parent with kids who don’t want to be slathered with sunscreen, a spray sunscreen is a lifesaver. It’s lightweight, applies quickly and even cools the skin upon application. Plus, it makes hard-to-reach areas easier to get to. Sun Bum and Coola each have great options to choose from and are great for the entire family. Just make sure you always apply in a well-ventilated area.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting your sunscreen to have some skincare benefits. In fact, I encourage it. Dr. Perricone’s Photo Plasma not only protects your skin against the sun, but also helps keep your skin looking youthful. Anti-aging ingredients like Alpa Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C Ester smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while brightening your skin.
