Keep Active Teens Happy Year-Round

School is back in full swing and for many teens, that means it's time for fall sports activities. One of the advantages I have from working in the store is that I get to talk with moms one on one and many of them voice concerns over what their teens should be using. If you have an active teenager at home and are looking for ways to get them through the school year with minimal breakouts and hair concerns, check out some of my top picks for them to try.

If your teen is prone to breakouts, Dermalogica's Clear Start line has eight products available to help minimize teen acne. The Foaming Wash is clear must-have for both day and night use. Made with Salicylic Acid, this foaming cleanser helps clean pores, and remove debris on the skin that can cause breakouts. Help your teen calm their skin with eight powerful botanicals which include Tea Tree, Lavender and Camellia Sinensis. Another great benefit from this cleanser is that it can be used on the back and shoulders, as well. If the problem is a little more serious, incorporate the All Over Toner to treat breakouts on the body.

Teens spend a great amount of time outdoors, and if they're athletes, they spend twice as much time outside. Protect their skin and help them control shine with Dermalogica's Clear Start Oil Clearing Matte Moisturizer SPF 15. This ultra-light moisturizer contains special botanicals that act as micro sponges, absorbing oil and eliminating shine. SPF helps protect their skin against damaging rays that can aggravate skin and cause breakouts.

Going blonde for summer? Read this first!

Going blonde for summer may be the drastic hair change you’re looking for, but can also cause a major beauty headache if you don’t go about it the right way. Making the change from brunette to blonde isn’t impossible, but does require a few steps to avoid a blonde blunder. If you’re looking to lighten up this summer, follow our tips for a stress-free transition.

Plan ahead: If you have a big event in the summer or a vacation planned, think about when you would like to actually have your hair done. The last thing you’ll want is showing up to your cousin’s wedding looking like Carrot Top.

Visit your stylist for a consultation: For a drastic hair change, it’s important that you have a trusting relationship with your stylist. In other words, this may not be the best time to try someone new. Your trusted stylist will give you a realistic time frame and cost when it comes to going blonde and won’t want to damage your hair in the process. To prepare for your visit, take a few pictures and most of all—temper your expectations. They’re stylists, not magicians.

Get your hair in the best shape of its life: To prepare your hair for a few bleaching sessions, you’ll want to have healthy hair. Use a professional quality shampoo and conditioner and treat your hair to a mask a couple of times a week if it’s really dry. Avoid using heat styling tools and try to limit how often you wash it.

Got Curls? This is a Must-Read!

Anyone with curls knows the struggle of achieving a good hair day. Between battling frizz, managing dryness and maintaining healthy-looking shine, some days, it’s just easier to call it a day and toss it up in a bun. If your biggest daily challenge is controlling your curls, then check out some tried and true tips to get your best hair day yet.

Choose your shampoo and conditioner wisely: Curls require a little extra love and attention, so make sure you look for shampoos and conditioners that will help bring out the best of your curls. Plenty of great brands now make specific shampoos and conditioners catered to curls, but there are also entire lines dedicated to curly-haired babes like Ouidad and Deva Curl Concepts. Since curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types, a solid moisturizing shampoo and conditioner can also do the trick.

Trim often and trim it dry: We curly-haired gals know how quickly our ends can look stringy and dry. Maintain healthy-looking ends by visiting your salon every 6 weeks for a trim. Since curly hair can be deceivingly long when it’s wet, make sure you’re asking for dry trims and cuts so that you don’t walk out of the salon looking like Little Orphan Annie.

Detangle wisely: Yes, curly hair can get quite tangled, therefore, you should always make sure you detangle as much of it as possible while you have conditioner in your hair. Invest in a wide tooth comb or use your fingers to run your conditioner through your hair. If your hair is particularly prone to tangling, make sure you don’t skip out on leave-in conditioner. Applying your leave-in before you come out of the shower will help keep your curls soft and manageable.

4 Nochella Beauty Party Ideas To Try This Weekend

If you’re feeling bummed about missing out on Coachella, then invite your friends over this weekend for a Nochella Pamper Party! Sure, watching live bands out in the desert is fun, but you can still stream some of the shows from the comfort of your couch while you party with your friends. This weekend, call your girls, drink some wine and indulge in some of our favorite pampering ideas!

Create a facial station: Set your table up with a few bowls, small towels, disposable spatulas or facial brushes and your favorite mask. Have a few handheld mirrors handy, too. Give your girls the treat of a multi-purpose mask like GLAMGLOW’S Youthmud. You’ll get all the benefits of a mask and the power of a little exfoliation, as well. If you’re looking for less mess and stress, you can also opt for sheet masks. Tony Moly has a wonderful variety of masks to choose from and they’re budget-friendly, too.

Put together a nail station: You’ll want a few small bowls, nail polish remover, Q-tips, cotton pads, cuticle oil, hand cream and of course, an assortment of nail polish to choose from. You can also make this a bring-your-own-polish party if your friends are particular about their shades. If you really want to shake things up, make it a nail art party and get a little artsy with your manicures. For some inspiration, visit Essie’s nail looks page.

Getting married? Check out our Bridal Beauty Checklist

It’s the start of wedding season and if you’ve recently gotten engaged, then you know how much work goes into planning. With endless appointments for venues, catering, music and of course—the dress, wedding planning can be a tad stressful. Having a beauty checklist for your big day can help ease some of the stress to make sure you look your best and have one less thing to worry about.

1. Keep your hair trimmed: Even if you plan on wearing an updo for your wedding day, you don’t want to risk having dry, split ends making your hair look frayed and unhealthy. Visit your salon every 6-8 weeks and get those ends trimmed. If you’re trying to grow your hair out, this will help the process along, too. Ask your stylist about hair treatments that will help your hair look its best.

2. Leave your brows to the professionals:  For the next year, months or weeks, put the tweezers down and leave your brows to a trusted professional. We have all committed eyebrow mistakes and the last thing you need in your life is a little “oops” days before your wedding.  Also, if you plan to try a new method of hair removal, do it weeks in advance in case it doesn’t agree with your delicate skin. No need for redness or breakouts on your big day.

3. Keep consistent nail appointments: This one’s mainly for your own relaxation, but it’s also good to have someone professional watching out for your nails, cuticles and unwanted calluses. You don’t want to run off to your honeymoon with rough feet, right?

Time-Saving Beauty Tips To Help You Survive Daylight Savings

Daylight Savings time is this Sunday and if you're already yawning thinking about that lost hour of sleep, you're not alone. No one really looks forward to Daylight Savings and it can almost seem like it takes a whole week to adjust. If you're already not a morning person, it can be particularly challenging. This week, hit the snooze button and save some time with your beauty routine. Check out our time-saving beauty tips to survive that dreaded Monday.

1. Skip the A.M face cleanse: If you normally wash your face in the sink every morning, ditch your regular face wash and get your face cleansed and toned with a micellar cleanser instead. All you need to do is take a soaked cotton pad and run it along your face. 5 seconds and you're good to go!

2. Cocktail your foundation and skincare: Professional makeup artists use this method when they're pressed for time and it will be your go-to technique when you're in a rush, too. Simply mix a drop of your foundation with your moisturizer, serum or primer and go to town. You can also apply this technique when your skin is in dire need of a quick glow. Mix your foundation with a drop of liquid luminizer for a radiant, youthful finish.

3. Detangle your hair in the shower: Don't wait until you're out of the shower to get any knots out of your hair. Just have a wide tooth comb handy in the shower and get any tangles out while you let your conditioner or mask do its thing. To avoid friction or tangles, use a microfiber towel to wrap your tangle-free hair. This will also help you cut down on blowdrying, as well.

7 Hair Mistakes That Will Cost You in the Chair

Everyone loves that fresh out of the salon feel when they get their hair done. The minute you walk outside, you feel like a million bucks. Your hair feels healthier, bouncier and shinier than ever before. While you may try to protect your investment as much as possible, there are a few bad habits that you might be doing that will cost you later.

1. Using the wrong shampoo: Ladies, (especially my beautiful redheads) if you just spent over $200 to get a beautiful shade of color put into your hair, the last thing you want is to see it wash down the drain each time you wash it. If you want to maintain the vibrancy of your hair color, choose a sulfate-free option when it comes to your shampoo. If you feel like your hair is getting brassy (I'm looking at you, my blonde bombshells) then incorporate a violet shampoo to keep your hair looking fresh.

2. Using the wrong styling tools: If you've ever gone shopping for a hair brush, you'll notice plenty of options when it comes to bristle types, sizes and shapes. Depending on your hair and texture, you'll want to choose wisely. You'll also want to invest in a few different types for different styling jobs. Talk to your stylist or beauty advisor about the best options for your particular hair type.

Kick off 2016 With These Six Beauty Resolutions!

With 2016 right around the corner, it's natural to start thinking about those New Year's resolutions. If you're looking for some inspiration, I invite you to try these small and simple beauty resolutions that will give you a great start to the new year! Start them on the 1st or whenever you feel changing things up. You can make a resolution at any time throughout the year.

1. Shake up your beauty products: When it comes to our beauty routine, many of us are loyal to the brands and products we love. While you should always try to fix what isn't broken, you may be missing out on a product that could be working better for you. If the thought of buying a new product terrifies you, try asking for some samples first.

2. Upgrade your skincare regimen: Whenever I ask customers why they love the skincare they're using oftentimes, I'm told they love it because it doesn't bother their skin. Finding a non-irritating skincare line is great, but shouldn't you love it because it makes your skin look amazing? Don't settle for a skincare product that does the bare minimum. If you're going to invest in your skin, make sure it's actually giving you results you love.

Style Your Hair Like a Pro and Cocktail Your Products

When it comes to getting our done, nothing makes us feel more confident than the first steps we take when we walk out of the salon with an amazing new style. That confidence is soon met with frustration when we attempt to recreate the magic in the days that follow. While you may have all the right tools (professional-quality styling tools, round brushes and styling product) your results may depend on one important little hairstyling trick: cocktails.

I'm not referring to a tasty cosmopolitan (by all means, DO enjoy one). I'm referring to hair product cocktails. When I observe our own stylist Sherry working on a client, there isn't one magical product she uses every time. Like a careful mixologist, I watch her add a spritz here and a dollop there of different styling products to create a perfect, individualized style for her clients. While styling products have evolved greatly over time, there really isn't one product that will give you that satisfactory style you're seeking. With just a little cocktail of styling products, you're style will be elevated to another level of greatness. If you're looking for some great cocktails to try this coming year, check out some of our stylist's favorites.
