The Best Beauty Trends of 2014

2014 was a fantastic year in beauty and we're rounding up our favorite trends! From the runway to Instagram, being bold was the way to go and it seemed like everyone was in on the fun. As we move into the new year, let's take a minute to reflect on some of the best beauty trends of 2014.

1. Bold Brows: Nothing seemed to complete a look better than a good set of bold brows. From Cara Delevingne to Lily Collins, it seemed as though everyone was trying to be on their eyebrow game. This is one trend that doesn't seem to ending any time soon, either.

2. Braids, Braids, Braids: Braided styles were everywhere this year! From the Red Carpet to Coachella, braided styles were the way to go. What better way to dress up a style than with a braid? It was fool-proof, all the way.

3. Bob Haircuts: Bob Haircuts brought on the long-hair apocalypse of 2014. Every celebrity seemed to have a shear obsession with this adorable shorter style. Between celebrities like Lauren Conrad, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Lawrence, Kaley Cuoco and many others, bob haircuts seemed to the most requested cut of the year.

4. Bold Lips: Traditional lip colors like nudes, reds and pinks can be nice, but this year was the year of blue, green and purple lip shades. This trend not only showed a more creative side to makeup artistry, but also reminded us that fun colors aren't just for Halloween.

3rd Annual JDRF Charity Event

This Wednesday, Planet Beauty will be hosting its third annual JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Charity Event at our Newport Beach location. Guests in attendance will receive free makeovers, brow makeovers, skin consultations, as well as quick hairstyles and tips. Everyone who attends will also receive a complimentary gift bag valued at $40. Sips and snacks will be provided by Lime California Crisp and the Newport Wine Company for all to enjoy. Planet Beauty will also be raffling $3,000 worth of prizes.

Twenty percent of all proceeds will go to JDRF, which will help continue to fund research efforts for healthcare management and a path toward a cure. As noted on the JDRF page, diabetes no longer affects only juveniles, therefore JDRF is committed to ALL people with type 1 diabetes. For anyone interested in supporting this important cause, two special girls will also be selling mistletoe to guests to support research to "kiss diabetes goodbye". Caroline Brewster and Katherine Hellmers, otherwise known as the Yule T1De Girls, will have little bags of mistletoe available for purchase.

In the spirit of the holidays, Planet Beauty is proud to take part in another wonderful event that will help continue to raise awareness in the community, as well as raise money for such an important cause. To learn more about JDRF and how you can help fight diabetes, please check out their website and share with your family and friends this holiday season.

Tips for Vibrant Color and Healthy Hair

Coloring your hair blue, pink, red or purple can be so much fun and  look really beautiful if done correctly and maintained with love and care. I've never been brave enough to do it myself, but I get asked lots of questions from customers interested in going bold with hair color. I thought I'd go to two of our beautiful employees from our Ontario location for advice. Both Valerie and Sam are experts when it comes to keeping hair color vibrant. After all, they are not strangers to chemically-treated hair. They were kind enough to share their beautiful hair secrets with us.

What's your go-to shampoo and conditioner for damaged hair?

Sam: My go to Shampoo/Conditioner is Pureology NanoWorks. When I first started working at Planet Beauty, my hair was so damaged and chemically cut. My manager at the time demanded I purchase Pureology Nanoworks and it has been my go-to ever since! I recommend this to anyone whose hair is over-processed. I don't use it as my daily shampoo, but anytime I bleach I make sure to use NanoWorks.

What's your secret to maintaining healthy ends?

Sam: My secret to maintaining healthy ends is using AVA Protective Hair Oil and Schwarzkopf Sealed Ends. I like to apply Ava oil mid-shaft to ends when my hair is very damp and follow up with Sealed Ends when my hair is slightly damp to almost dry. These two products are amazing and keep my hair moisturized, shiny, and smooth!

What's your go-to treatment masque?

Sam: My favorite treatment at the moment would have to be I.C.O.N Inner Home. It's such a hydrating treatment and has really helped strengthen my hair, making it more manageable for me to style.

What's your advice for anyone looking to color their hair like yours?

Soothe Your Scalp With These Healing Remedies

If you've ever experienced an itchy scalp, then you know the discomfort that may arise from continual scratching. Not being able to contain the itch can lead to more discomfort and sometimes flaking, whether your itchiness is caused by an underlying skin condition or just dryness. If you're one of the many people who deal with itchy scalp, Planet Beauty has some great remedies to help soothe and ease the discomfort.

Rene Furturer's Astera Soothing Freshness Fluid: Soothe and cool your irritated scalp with this cooling fluid. Anti-inflammatory and healing ingredients leave your scalp feeling calmed and cooled, reducing itchiness and irritation. Ingredients like Mint and Eucalyptus soothe and cleanse your scalp, while Echinacea, Vitamin A and Vitamin E help protect the scalp and promote healing.

Nioxin Scalp Recovery Soothing Serum: If you have a condition like seborrheic dermatitis, Nioxin's Scalp Recovery Soothing Serum may be a great option for you. Made with 0.1% pyrithione zinc, this serum helps relieve and prevent symptoms that can be caused by scalp conditions. Other ingredients like Peppermint, and Chamomile help cool and calm your scalp, as well.

Moroccanoil Dry Treatment: Balance your scalp and relive irritation with Moroccanoil's Dry Scalp Treatment. This lightweight formula is packed with antioxidant rich Argan Oil, Lavender, and Geranium oils that help soothe the scalp from irritation, dryness and itch. Circulation in the scalp is vastly improved, reducing flakiness and allowing your hair to grow in a healthier environment.

Co-Washing Trend Alert

If you have curly hair or know someone with curly hair, then you are probably familiar with the concept of co washing or conditioning washing. People with textured or curly hair are constantly struggling with dehydrated strands, which is one of the many reason many opt for this way of cleansing. (I know this all too well, since I have naturally wavy hair.) Cleansing with conditioner not only cuts down on frizz but gives hair an unbelievable amount of smoothness and shine. In recent months, co washing has become extremely popular among all hair types and women who color-treat are particularly showing interest in this trend. Now, before you toss out your shampoo, don't. Co washing isn't for everyone. In fact, some stylists recommend switching back and forth, as long as the shampoo you use is sulfate-free. If you've been looking to try a cleansing conditioner, check out some of Planet Beauty's options.

1. DevaCurl No-Poo: This award-winning, non-lathering shampoo alternative has been a favorite among curly and wavy-haired gals for years. Ingredients like Grapeseed Oil, Peppermint Oil and Rosemary Extract keep hair highly moisturized and gently stimulated and cleansed.

2. Ouidad Curl Co-Wash: This rich, low-lathering, sulfate-free cleansing conditioner gives your hair intense moisture, while eliminating frizz and clearing hair of buildup. Black Cumin Seed Oil and Jamaican Black oil work thoroughly to condition hair, while adding nourishment with vitamins and minerals. Rosemary and Sage Oils balance the scalp, leaving it feeling refreshed and cleansed. A naturally-derived coconut cleanser gives this co-wash a unique foamy texture.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness month and this year, some of our favorite beauty lines are teaming up with great organizations to spread awareness, support and education for women across the country. As we know, breast cancer affects millions of women every day. The fight against this potentially deadly cancer is awareness and preventative health. Join the fight and check out just some of the products you can feel really good about purchasing this month.

1. Kenra Hair Care: This year, Kenra has teamed up with The Rapunzel Project, a non-profit organization who has dedicated their time and energy into helping chemotherapy patients keep their hair during treatment. Both of its founders are breast cancer survivors whose experiences led them to starting this noble cause. This month, when you purchase PINK Kenra Volume Spray 25 and Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray, a donation will be made to The Rapunzel Project. To learn more, check out their website.

2. Murad Skin Care: Quench your skin AND help fight breast cancer with Murad's Hydrate for Hope Hydro-Dynamic Moisturizer. Murad's been working closely with City of Hope to educate and raise awareness for years now. Like previous years, ten percent of the sales will benefit the Women's Cancers Program. Murad has already donated over $200,000 to City of Hope with the Hydrate for Hope program. This year, the specially marked moisturizer will come in a pink bag featuring fabric print with Dr. Howard Murad's original art work.

Survive a Heat Wave With Our Cooling Must-Haves

Living in California has so many wonderful benefits, but sometimes, it has unexpected surprises, like this September heat wave we've been experiencing. I don't know about you, but I've been feeling mighty icky this entire week. When it's 90 degrees plus outside, our entire body feels it. Getting adequate hydration and SPF is vital, but you may also be in need of a cooling pick-me-up in your beauty routine. If your hair and skin has been suffering through this heat, check out some of our favorite refreshing beauty products.

The mixture of heat and humidity can make your face feel totally gross and sticky, and if you have combination/oily skin, you tend to be more prone to breakouts, too. Nothing says ahhhh like a cooling cleanser to remove makeup and impurities during hot days. Dr. Perricone's Citrus Facial Wash gently cleanses skin and offers anti-aging support with DMAE. The refreshing scent of citrus is so refreshing, your skin will feel instantly cooler after use.

Caudalie's Beauty Elixir can be used in the morning to set your makeup, during the day as a refresher and at night as your toner. Infused with ingredients like Rosemary, Peppermint, Rose and Grapefruit oils, this wonderfully refreshing spray instantly cools your skin upon contact and invigorates your senses. You'll never want to go through another heatwave without it.

Nourishing Shampoo to the Rescue

Keeping hair looking healthy and feeling can be a trial sometimes, especially if you tend to color every 4-6 weeks and use heat styling tools more than three times a week. Most of us look to treatment oils to help keep our hair shiny and ends from drying and splitting, but now some professional haircare lines are offering us another remedy: shampoos with oils. If your hair feels particularly brittle lately, maybe it's time to give one of these shampoos a try.

1. Pureology's Precious Oil Shamp'oil: Give your hair an intense boost of softness with this gentle, sulfate-free shamp'oil. Infused with Sunflower Seed and Coconut Oil, this shampoo lightly conditions hair and smoothes out brittle ends, while intensifying shine and color vibrancy. Follow up with the conditioner and oil for beautiful results. If your hair is thick, you can use this daily to smooth out frizzy, dry hair. If your hair is on the finer side, use this system once or twice a week as a treatment.

2. Ouidad's Curl Recovery Ultra-Nourishing Cleansing Oil: For our curly-haired gals, Ouidad offers a wonderful remedy to frizzy and unruly hair with their water-activated, sulfate and paraben-free shampoo. Ouidad's proprietary CR-4 Repair Complex is compiled of Mafura Butter and Kalahari Melon Seed Oil, which help create a cushion-like coating of essential fatty acids around the hair. This nutrient-rich complex helps strengthen, nourish and protect hair from dryness and breakage. Silk proteins and Coconut oils bind to the cuticle of the hair, improving hydration and protecting from damage, leaving hair soft and silky.
