Common Foundation Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Finding the perfect foundation takes a little bit of work and one does not fit all. Customers often ask me what foundation I use, mostly because they like how it appears on my skin: natural and smooth with a satin finish. While I LOVE my foundation (for the record, I'm currently obsessed with Smashbox's Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation), I don't give it all the credit for how my makeup looks. What I try to explain to customers is that my foundation is just a small step in a series of other steps I take to ensure my skin looks as flawless as possible. I mostly give credit to my skincare regimen, which keeps my skin looking its best. Of course, there are other contributing factors, as well. If you're having trouble finding a foundation you love or the one you've been using just doesn't look the way you want it, you may be making one of these 5 common foundation mistakes.

1. You may not be prepping your skin properly beforehand: In my almost nine years of working at Planet Beauty, I have always stressed a strong emphasis on skincare before makeup application. A foundation can do a pretty good job on concealing problem areas you may have, but it won't do much to correct the issue you're having. I'll oftentimes apply a foundation on a client, only to notice extreme dehydration on the skin's surface. If you have broken skin, foundation may not only irritate it, but can accentuate the blemishes or breakouts you're trying to hide. Taking good care of your skin will make a huge difference in how your foundation goes on. Cleanse properly. Exfoliate if your skin allows it. Treat your skin with topical products. Moisturize. Wear sunscreen. My other advice? Drink plenty of water.
