Common Foundation Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Finding the perfect foundation takes a little bit of work and one does not fit all. Customers often ask me what foundation I use, mostly because they like how it appears on my skin: natural and smooth with a satin finish. While I LOVE my foundation (for the record, I'm currently obsessed with Smashbox's Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation), I don't give it all the credit for how my makeup looks. What I try to explain to customers is that my foundation is just a small step in a series of other steps I take to ensure my skin looks as flawless as possible. I mostly give credit to my skincare regimen, which keeps my skin looking its best. Of course, there are other contributing factors, as well. If you're having trouble finding a foundation you love or the one you've been using just doesn't look the way you want it, you may be making one of these 5 common foundation mistakes.

1. You may not be prepping your skin properly beforehand: In my almost nine years of working at Planet Beauty, I have always stressed a strong emphasis on skincare before makeup application. A foundation can do a pretty good job on concealing problem areas you may have, but it won't do much to correct the issue you're having. I'll oftentimes apply a foundation on a client, only to notice extreme dehydration on the skin's surface. If you have broken skin, foundation may not only irritate it, but can accentuate the blemishes or breakouts you're trying to hide. Taking good care of your skin will make a huge difference in how your foundation goes on. Cleanse properly. Exfoliate if your skin allows it. Treat your skin with topical products. Moisturize. Wear sunscreen. My other advice? Drink plenty of water.

On the other hand, you want to look and feel fabulous. If you're unsure what to pack, I have eight honeymoon must-haves that you shouldn't leave without.

Whether you want a sheer or medium coverage, this is a must-have for the ultimate, woke-up-like-this look.

3. Jane Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain: Get that beautiful flushed look with this beauty must-have. Another multi-tasker, you can leave the blush at home and use this on both your lips and cheeks. Available in rose or peach, you can choose the tone that best works for you.

Brighten Up Your Beauty Routine With a Pop Of Color

Is your daily beauty routine lacking color? Do you find yourself drowning in a sea of nude shades? If so, I invite you to take action just in time for summer! It’s the perfect season to show a fun, colorful side to your personality. Even subtle experimentation can take your look to another level. If you’re ready to brighten things up, check out some ways you can stand out and rock some color in your beauty routine.

Try a colorful smokey eye:  Okay, so maybe a colorful smokey eye isn’t office appropriate, but you can definitely work it for the weekend.  One of the best palettes out right now is Too Faced’s Sugar Pop Eyeshadow Palette. The glamour guide included in the palette gives you step by step instructions and helps you find the perfect shades to make your eye color stand out. This palette is a definite must-have for summer.

Opt for a colorful liner: This month, skip the eyeshadow and go straight for a colorful liner. Wearing colored eyeliner seems simple, but can add a nice dramatic effect that draws all attention to your eyes. If you have yet to try Smashbox’s Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liners, then you’re missing out. These gel liners easily glide on with a minimal amount of product and are perfect for summer weather.

Give your nails a splash of color: Give your French or nude manicure a rest and get creative with your nails this month! OPI’s ColorPaints are the nail must-have products for summer. These gorgeous shades will bring out the inner artist in everyone. Layer them and blend them to create colorful nail art. The silver base works to draw out the color of the paints for a unique manicure each time. When it comes to ColorPaints, there are no rules! With eight shades available, the possibilities are endless!

Contour with Kevyn Aucoin Just In Time For Summer!

If you’re still trying to figure out the contouring game, then you’re going to want the newest addition of Kevyn Aucoin cosmetics to arrive at Planet Beauty. It’s easy to be intimidated by the war paint you find on Pinterest and let’s face it—some of that crazy contouring just doesn’t look natural sometimes. If you’re tired of blending endlessly and still haven’t found your contouring groove, take a look at Kevyn Aucoin’s products to help you, as well as the other exciting must-haves in his line.

There are many different products you can use to sculpt and define your cheekbones and face. Using darker foundation, shadow or bronzer are common products. Kevyn Aucoin has taken the guesswork out of the finding the right shade with The Sculpting Powder in Medium. This sheer to full coverage powder contains brown, red and grey pigments to create the perfect, natural shade for defining and sculpting. Since the shade isn’t super dark, achieving a natural look will be easier and faster. If you’re worried about the summer weather ruining your style, don’t worry. The Sculpting Powder is waterproof and crease-proof for all day wear.

For flawless highlighting, Kevyn Aucoin has two products you can use to achieve a natural, luminous look. If you prefer a powder formula, The Celestial Powder is sheer and opalescent, giving your skin a subtle glow and blurring imperfections. For a kiss of pink and gold hues, try the Starlight Powder. This is also a great shade to use over blush to enhance its luminosity. The Candlelight Powder is a soft pearl and champagne shade that can be used lightly over the face or on specific areas for highlighting.

Beauty Trends from Coachella We're Dying to Perfect

Coachella may be over, but we are still obsessing over some of the beauty trends we saw throughout the festival. While some beauty looks are festival-exclusive, there are others that we're dying to perfect before summer's arrival. Check out some of our favorite beauty trends that were all the buzz at Coachella.

Pastel Hair: Just when we think the pastel hair trend might be going away, another fabulous and lovely celebrity proves us wrong. Julianne Hough sported gorgeous pink hair at Coachella and looked absolutely amazing. If you're feeling tempted to jump on the pastel hair bandwagon, keep a few things in mind. First, consider permament and semi-permanent options. Second, consult a professional colorist to minimize damage and dryness to your cuticle. Lastly, make sure you use a high-quality sulfate free shampoo to retain your color and keep your hair looking healthy. Colure's Richly Moisturize Shampoo and Conditioner is perfect for prolonging hair color and keeping your strands soft and manageable.

Oscars Beauty Inspiration for Spring

The Oscars may be over, but the beauty trends we saw on the Red Carpet this year are just beginning to inspire us for spring. The prestigious award show never disappoints in the beauty department and this year was no exception. With timeless hair styles and makeup looks, everything we saw can be replicated in day to day life. After all, you don't need to be a star to be fabulous.

This year, GHD was responsible for the winning looks of Keira Knightley, Zoe Saldana, Emma Stone and Marion Cotillard. Using the ghd Curve, stylists creating romantic, loose waves for Stone, Saldana and Knightley. Cotillard's feminine and clean bun was created with the ghd Eclipse. Both of these amazing tools are available now at Planet Beauty. Create a casual wavy style and incorporate a soft beach spray for spring. If you're looking for smooth tresses, you'll want the ghd Ecplise to smooth out your hair and give it some killer shine.

NYFW 2015 Beauty Trends To Follow

New York Fashion Week 2015 brought us some great beauty trends this year, from fresh takes on makeup to inspired on-the-go hairstyles. There is so much beauty inspiration to take from New York Fashion Week, so I compiled a list of the five easiest trends to recreate at home.

1. Minimalist Makeup: From Marc Jacobs to Donna Karan, models on the runway sported very little (if any) face makeup, letting their natural skin shine through. Whether you have freckles or slight imperfections, I dare you to be bare. Two products that are perfect for this trend both come from Dr. Perricone. If the thought of being without foundation scares you a bit, pick up No Foundation Foundation. This will give you slight coverage, while allowing your skin to look natural. If you just want a glow without coverage, Dr. Perricone's new Face Finishing Moisturizer Tint is the perfect au naturel skincare must-have.

2. Subtle Smokey Eyes: If you've always steered clear of the smokey eye, don't. A subtle smokey eye requires less work and still looks fabulously chic. There are different ways to achieve a subtle smokey eye. Choose colors that are on the gray and brown side and use soft strokes with application. You can also achieve a subtle smokey eye by simply keeping the darker color to the outer corners of your eyes only. Smashbox's Full Exposure Palette has every perfect color imaginable for the best smokey eyes, whether they're dramatic or subtle.
